Project Description

The Digital Measurement Wheel for Industrial Cutting Machines was developed to deliver accurate, real-time length measurement in woodworking and industrial cutting environments. Manual measurement methods and visual markings are prone to human error, especially during continuous cutting operations where speed, vibration, and material variation are present. This project focused on creating a robust measurement solution that integrates directly into cutting workflows, providing operators with precise length feedback without interrupting production.

The system uses a rubberized measurement wheel mounted on a stable support frame, ensuring consistent contact with moving material during cutting. Rotational data from the wheel is captured through an encoder and processed by an embedded controller, with live measurements displayed on a touch-enabled interface. The result is an intuitive tool that allows operators to monitor cut length in real time with minimal training.

The Challenge

Industrial cutting machines generate constant vibration, dust, and mechanical noise, all of which can degrade measurement accuracy. Maintaining reliable wheel contact with uneven material surfaces while filtering out vibration-induced signal noise was a key challenge. The system also needed to deliver accurate readings at varying feed speeds without drift or latency.

The Process

Development began with mechanical optimization of the wheel assembly, focusing on material selection, diameter consistency, and mounting rigidity. Encoder resolution was carefully chosen to balance precision and processing load. Embedded firmware was then developed with signal filtering and debouncing logic to eliminate noise caused by vibration and rapid motion changes. Extensive testing was conducted across different cutting speeds and material types to validate repeatability and accuracy.
